Gotta Pop the Bubble Sometime
Because I've grown up going to church and have gone to the Christian school all my life, I live in a fairly big Christian bubble. I'm pretty oblivious to most everything that actually goes on within highschools and the nasty stuff that is actually out there.Yesterday at ball practice, which is really the only thing I'm involved in that doesn't take place in a Christian environment, some girls were talking casually about all the beer they drink as if it's the most normal thing in the world. The rest were just listening to them rant. They were talking about how much beer they drink, making fun of "rookies" who can't drink very much, talking about drugs and parties, etc. It was horrible. I mean...not really, but it was a reality check for me. It brought me out of my bubble momentarily. However, I think that needs to happen more often. It was good for me to get a glimpse of teenage reality. It challenged me to love them like Jesus loved the Pharisees and tax collectors. It challenged me to not put myself above them just because my morals were different, but to love them for who they were. Obviously not loving the sin...but still loving them.
After all, that's what Jesus' whole minstry on earth was about. Love. He lowered himself and lived amongst us sinners. Love. He then went on to sacrifice himself.
I think that's one of the most powerful ways to draw others to Christ anyway. Not by juding them, not by preaching at them, and not by staying away from them all together, but by living out God's love. The girls on my ball team know I go to the Christian school, they know where I stand morally. Therefore, that step is already done for me. Now I just need to live in a way that shows them what that actually means. I believe it means unconditional love, that Christianity is not all about rules and regulations but about living in response to Christ's unconditional love.
So...now I have to live that way.
